Two People, Four Huskies, and One Simple Mission
SaveAPaw started at a kitchen table, not in a boardroom.
We’re Joe and MaryAnn, and if you’ve spent any time around huskies, you already know what that means for our floors, our furniture, and our vacation plans for the last two decades. We’ve shared our home with four different Siberian huskies over more than 20 years, and every one of them taught us something different about what it actually takes to live well with a dog. Loki taught us patience. Nova taught us that a bored husky will find a way to redecorate your living room. Birch taught us how much a dog can heal a hard year. And our current shadow, Suka, reminds us daily that a walk is never really optional.
We didn’t start this site because we’re professional trainers or veterinarians. We started it because we’re dog people, the kind who read ingredient labels on treats and know our vet’s cell number by heart. Along the way we made mistakes, asked too many questions at the shelter, and slowly figured out what actually works.
Why We Focus on Adoption
Every one of our four huskies came from a rescue or a shelter, not a breeder and never a pet store. That wasn’t an accident.
Puppy mills and the storefronts that sell their puppies treat dogs like inventory. The parents live in cages their whole lives, the puppies are pulled from their mothers too early, and the health problems that come from careless breeding often don’t show up until months after the sale, when a family has already fallen in love. Shelters and rescues, on the other hand, are full of healthy, adoptable dogs of every age and breed who are simply waiting for someone to say yes.
We’re not going to pretend adoption is always the easy path. Shelter dogs sometimes come with a little history and a lot of unknowns. But in our experience, that history is rarely the obstacle people expect it to be, and the payoff of watching a nervous, overlooked dog settle into a family that loves them is hard to put into words. Suka spent seven months in a rescue before we found her. She was the best decision we’ve made in years.
